High strength stainless steel 14301 for prestressed concrete structures protection
High Strength Stainless Steels (HSSS) are being developed with the aim to improve corrosion resistance of prestressed concrete structures in aggressive environments. In the present paper focus is given to mechanical and corrosion performance of a HSSS type 14301. The ability of passivation in alkaline media and the risk of local corrosion (pitting) in presence of chlorides, has been determined. Besides, the response of the stainless steel submitted to mechanical strains similar to those in service is considered with respect to the risk of corrosion, Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) and Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE). The cold-drawn HSSS 14301 shows higher tolerance to chloride ion than conventional prestressing steel. The local corrosion becomes significant for chloride contents above 0.75 M. The applied load moves pitting corrosion initiation at lower concentrations of chlorides. The pitting enhances risk for SCC developing, although the steel is more resistance to HE in comparison with conventional presstressing ste
Assessment of the antioxidant properties of tomato extracts: A synergistic approach using in vitro chemical tests and cell-based assays
The aim of this research was to assess the total antioxidant activity (TAA) of lipophilic (Lextr) and hydrophilic (Hextr) tomato extracts using in vitro chemical tests and cell-based assays, focusing on possible synergistic actions between tomato antioxidants. Both Hextr and Lextr were HPLC analysed for their carotenoids, phenolic compounds, and ascorbic acid contents. For the evaluation of TAA, extracts were assayed alone or in combination using in vitro chemical tests (TEAC, FRAP) and cell-based (CAA) assays using human hepatoma (HepG2) and human histiocytic lymphoma (U937) cells. The only carotenoid detected in Lextr was lycopene, while a mixture of phenolic compounds (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and rutin) was identified in Hextr. Ascorbic acid was not found either in Hextr or in Lextr. Upon extract combination (1:1, v/v), the FRAP assay revealed additive action between Lextr and Hextr, whilst a slight synergistic action was observed in TAA as measured by the TEAC assay. Synergistic action was better revealed when TAA was analysed using either U937 or HepG2 cells. This could be explained by the presence of a multiphase media (cell membrane and extra- and intracellular media) that might facilitate the distribution and interaction of antioxidants with different polarities and different mechanisms of action
Constructing Formally Verified Reasoners for the ALC Description Logic
AbstractDescription Logics are a family of logics used to represent and reason about conceptual and terminological knowledge. Recently, its importance has been increased since they are used as a basis for the Ontology Web Language (OWL) used for the Semantic Web. In previous work, we have developed in PVS a generic framework for reasoning in the ALC description logic, proving its termination, soundness and completeness. In this paper we present the construction, from the generic framework, of a formally verified generic tableau-based algorithm for checking satisfiability of ALC-concepts. We do it using a methodology of refinements to transfer the properties from the framework to the algorithm. We also obtain some verified reasoners from the algorithm by a process of instantiation

Using Multi-granular Fuzzy Linguistic Modelling Methods to Represent Social Networks Related Information in an Organized Way
Social networks are the preferred mean for experts to share their knowledge and provide information.
Therefore, it is one of the best sources that can be used for obtaining data that can
be used for a high amount of purposes. For instance, determining social needs, identifying problems,
getting opinions about certain topics, ... Nevertheless, this kind of information is difficult
for a computational system to interpret due to the fact that the text is presented in free form and
that the information that represents is imprecise. In this paper, a novel method for extracting information from social networks and represent it in a fuzzy ontology is presented. Sentiment analysis
procedures are used in order to extract information from free text. Moreover, multi-granular
fuzzy linguistic modelling methods are used for converting the information into the most suitable
representation mean. This work has been supported by the ’Juan de la Cierva Incorporación’ grant from the Spanish

Coherent artifact and time-dependent polarization in amplified ultrafast erbium-doped fibre lasers
Mode-locked erbium-doped fibre lasers are ultrashort pulsed sources widely studied due to their versatility and multiple applications in the near infrared range. Here we present the experimental study of the emission of a passive mode-locked erbium-doped fibre laser with an amplification stage outside the cavity by means of Frequency Resolved Optical Gating (FROG) and spectral interferometry. Due to shot-to-shot instabilities, the FROG traces can be understood as the combination of two different traces, corresponding to the coherent artifact and the average pulse characteristics. We have modified a Principal Components Generalized Projections Algorithm, in order to make it able to retrieve efficiently both the coherent artifact and the average pulse. In addition, we study the temporal dependence of the polarization, showing that the pulses present time-dependent polarization with a stable spectral relative phase between the horizontal and vertical projections. Up to our knowledge, this is the first experimental study that shows the FROG measurements of unstable pulse trains associated with the coherent artifact and analyses the time-dependent polarization in ultrafast fibre lasers
The role of late Quaternary tectonic activity and sea-level changes on sedimentary processes interaction in the Gulf of Cadiz upper and middle continental slope (SW Iberia)
A morphological and seismic-stratigraphic analysis of the Gulf of Cadiz area near the Strait of Gibraltar is presented
in this work, focused on the sedimentary evolution of the upper and proximal middle-continental slope
since the Mid-Pleistocene. Based on the analysis of seismic reflection profiles and swath bathymetry data, this
work analyses the close influence of the activity of buried and outcropping diapiric ridges and late Quaternary
sea-level changes on the evolution of contouritic features related to the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW)
and Eastern North Atlantic Central Water (ENACW), gravitational features and fluid-escape structures. The
stratigraphic architecture reveals that, under active diapiric deformation, the upper slope plastered drift grew
during low sea-level stages, when sediment supply was high and the ENACW swept the upper slope, contrasting
with the present-day highstand situation dominated by northwest-trending MOW flow. The south-estward
ENACW flow forced asymmetry and lateral migration of gullies incised in the plastered drift. Two evolutionary
stages have been established: 1) After the Mid Pleistocene, activity of diapirs with a NE trend determined
the location of the deepest depressions which were infilled by plastered contouritic drifts; 2) Between Late
Quaternary and present, a drastic change of buried diapirs growth pattern and orientation to a NW trend
enhanced slope-derived gravitational processes affecting the bottom current dynamics. Adjustments to tectonic
changes led to a phase of plastered drift growth on the upper slope during which depocenters varied their distribution
and orientation. In a long-term the structural control on sedimentation shows a northwestward
displacement of deformation, resulting in an overall extension of the contourite depositional system to the NW.
In a short-term, sea-level changes favored drift deposition, gullies incision and the strengthening of water masses.
This work evidences the importance of tectonic deformation in sedimentation at recent time scales, and the twodirectional
interplay between recent tectonic activity and bottom current dynamics.Versión del edito
